Flake

When Rolo died, we needed to get Muppet a new friend very quickly so we took him along to Mercia Ferret Rescue to meet some new ferrets. Rose, at the Rescue, put both Flake and her Sister down with Muppet, and Flake literally decided he was the “man” for her and would not leave him alone, literally following him everywhere.

Flake and her sister, Wispa, had been at the rescue for over a year, and when Flake had arrived there, she was pregnant. The rescue had looked after her, her sister, and the kits, and once they were old enough, re-homed all her babies, but unfortunately no-one had taken either her or her sister off to a new home, and for some strange reason they had never made the effort to get on with any of the other ferrets that had come in looking for new friends.

Luckily for us, they were just what we needed to try and stop Muppet from pining, and to top it off, both gorgeous little albino girls. Much to the surprise of the rescue, we took both home with us as it did not seem right to split them up and we had the room for 2 more ferrets in our home and hearts.

Once at home, they made them selves comfortable, and enjoyed all the things we had to offer them, but Flake and Muppet were the best of friends, and could always be found curled up together. We soon discovered that the sisters had very different personalities. Flake was smaller, and quieter, loved to have cuddles, and played less, although when she did play, she was very bouncy. When Muppet died, Flake took it very badly, and we were very worried about her, so we went out straight away, and got her and her sister a couple of new playmates to try and distract her from her morning. Fortunately, Flake came round, and actually decided that the new guys were not too bad and eventual could be found curled up with Twix, once he had tired himself out and settled back in to bed

She was not really a people ferret, and if she did not like you, she would give a nasty nip, but luckily, she liked us, and would only occasionally nip when tired. She loved to go out with us on walks, but only as long as she was carried, and became known as Clive’s Pocket Ferret, as she liked to curl up inside his pockets, with just her head sticking out, watching the world go by. If he stopped for a snack, she was straight out, to see what might be on offer, and if it there wasn’t anything of interest, she climbed back into his pocket.

She was a true ferret thief and kleptomaniac, stealing sponges and cloths at any given opportunity, and stashing her favourite Nylabones and balls under the furniture. Another trait, was an obsession with Tomatoes, which she would actually fight you for. She would be fixated on getting the tomato, and ignore anything else on your plate. On the few occasions she did get a bit, she would wolf it down, like it was the finest food she had ever eaten, and be back for more.

If she found us, sitting on the sofa, she would actually come up for a cuddle, and would either sleep curled up on our chest, with a hand over her, or in a sleep sack, on the sofa between us, often doing the sweet paws drawn over her ears, down her nose pose, which is always so cute to watch.

Unfortunately, Flake had severe Cancer, and by the time it was discovered, it was so bad, that the Vet said the kindest thing was to leave her under the anaesthetic, as she was actually in pain.

We will miss you dearly Flake, because among the things you stole, one of them was our hearts. You had huge amounts of character, and even though you were probably in pain for a while, you remained dignified, and made us feel special for choosing us, as your forever home.

Identifying features:- Very friendly. Loves cuddles, Walks OK on lead, prefers to sit in your pocket. She sometimes gets carried away, and can bite harder than he should when playing.
