Ferret PR
Unfortunately because of old fashioned ideals, passed down by word of mouth, over hundreds of generations, there are a lot of people who have completely the wrong information relating to ferrets and their welfare.
In times gone by, ferrets were only kept as working animals. This created several issues, firstly, people did not neuter their pets, and there was no such thing as “Jill Jabs”. Since female ferrets do not come out of “season” unless mated, and can have at least 2 litters a year, each consisting of up to 8 kits, there was an abundance of young ferrets, and they were seen as expendable animals.
They were mainly kept in hutches at the bottom of the garden, usually being feed on bread and milk, with the odd dead rabbit thrown in.
I have had some elderly gentlemen proudly tell me how they kept their ferrets so well, some even lived to be 3 or 4 years old. Ferrets are Obligate Carnivores, and their diet needs to consists of 100% meat, milk is actually bad for ferrets owing to them being Lactose intolerant. A ferret can actually live up to 10 years old and sometimes more, if kept well, so you can see the irony of their statements.
We work with several Ferret Rescues, and while trying to raise money for the rescue, we also try to educate people about ferrets, trying to cover everything from feeding, to housing and handling.
The following are a copy of some of the posters we use to help pass this information over in a slightly less lecturing way.
